The two questions that decide whether a fabricated grate or steel assembly lasts are rarely about the steel itself. They are: how is it finished, and how does it arrive intact on a site two thousand kilometres away? Hot-Dip Galvanizing for Grates: The Canadian Workhorse

For exterior steel in a Canadian climate, hot-dip galvanizing is the default for good reason. The part is cleaned, fluxed and dipped in molten zinc, which metallurgically bonds to the steel and forms a coating that protects both as a barrier and sacrificially at any scratch or cut edge. That sacrificial behaviour is what makes it forgiving on site, where coatings inevitably get nicked.

For bar grating, trench drain grates and catch basin grates exposed to rain, road salt and freeze-thaw, hot-dip galvanizing routinely delivers decades of service before first maintenance.

We galvanize to the relevant CSA/ASTM coating-thickness specifications and arrange dipping with established galvanizing partners; we do not run an in-house kettle, so when we say a piece is galvanized to spec, that means we manage the process and verify the result rather than overstating what happens under our own roof.

Where Powder Coat and Duplex Systems Fit

Powder coat is a colour and appearance decision more than a corrosion decision. Applied directly over bare steel it gives clean colour but limited long-term protection in harsh exterior service, because once the film is breached the steel underneath has no backup. The stronger approach is a duplex system: hot-dip galvanizing first, then powder coat over the prepared zinc.

You get the sacrificial protection of zinc and the colour, UV stability and smoother finish of powder, and the two systems together typically outlast the sum of their individual lifespans. Duplex is what we usually recommend when an architectural screen, railing or visible custom grate has to be both a specific colour and durable outdoors.

For interiors, wash-down or hygienic environments, stainless steel is often the better answer than any coating at all, which is why our stainless steel floor grates exist as a separate product line.

Designing Steel That Galvanizes Cleanly

Galvanizing quality is decided on the drawing board, not at the kettle. Molten zinc has to flow into, through and back out of every part of the assembly, and trapped air or trapped zinc ruins both the coating and the part. The practical rules are straightforward once you build to them, and we resolve them in our drawings before anything is cut.

  • Vent and drain holes: Hollow sections, tube frames and box assemblies need correctly sized and positioned holes so air escapes on the way in and molten zinc drains on the way out. Skip them and you risk a blowout, an uncoated interior, or zinc that solidifies as dead weight inside the member.
  • Distortion control: Galvanizing heats steel to around 450 °C, and uneven or highly stressed sections can warp. We balance plate thicknesses, sequence welds and detail symmetrical assemblies to keep thin, wide or long pieces flat through the dip.
  • Continuous welds and clean details: Overlapping surfaces and skip welds can trap cleaning chemicals that later bleed and stain. Continuous seal welds at critical joints keep the coating uniform.
  • Bath-size awareness: Large grates, access platforms and long structural steel members may exceed a single kettle and require progressive dipping or designed splices. We plan piece sizes around the bath up front so a part never arrives at the galvanizer impossible to dip.

Matching the Finish to the Environment

There is no single best finish, only the right finish for where the steel lives. A dry interior mezzanine, a salted municipal sidewalk, a coastal platform and a food-grade wash-down room are four different corrosion problems. A perfectly finished grate is worth nothing if it arrives bent, rubbed bare, or short a piece. Shipping across Canada is part of the fabrication, not a hand-off, so we crate and palletize for the trip, not just for the loading dock. Grates are stacked and banded with edge protection so the galvanized surface is not chafed in transit, structural members are bundled and dunnaged to prevent racking, and assemblies are blocked so they cannot shift.

Frames, fasteners and loose components ship clearly labelled and tied to the drawing set, so the crew on the other end knows exactly what mates with what. We coordinate LTL and flatbed freight to sites across every province, and we work with general contractors on delivery sequencing so material lands when the site is ready for it rather than weeks early.
