304 vs 316 Stainless Grates: Choosing the Right Alloy

304 vs 316 stainless grates compared for food, pharma and wash-down areas. Learn when 316 is worth the cost, plus electropolishing and sanitary detailing tips.

Specifying the wrong stainless alloy for a wash-down floor is an expensive mistake that shows up six months later as rust bloom in the trench, pitting around weld seams, and a failed sanitation audit.

If you are weighing 304 vs 316 stainless grates for a food, beverage, or pharmaceutical facility, the decision comes down to one question that most spec sheets gloss over: how much chloride is your drainage actually seeing? Get that right and you avoid both premature corrosion and the equally common error of over-specifying expensive alloy where it earns nothing.

The core difference between 304 and 316 stainless

Both 304 and 316 are austenitic stainless steels, and both resist corrosion by forming a passive chromium-oxide layer. The decisive difference is molybdenum. Grade 316 contains roughly 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, which dramatically improves resistance to chloride-induced pitting and crevice corrosion. Grade 304 has none. In a dry interior, that gap is invisible. In a salty, acidic, or chemically aggressive wash-down zone, it is the whole game.

Chlorides are the enemy of stainless. They come from brine, cured meats, cheese processing, seawater and coastal air, many sanitizers, and de-icing salt tracked in on tires and boots. When chloride concentration climbs, the passive layer on 304 breaks down locally and you get pinpoint pitting that no amount of cleaning reverses. That same exposure barely touches 316.

When 304 is the right call

304 is a workhorse, and for good reason. It handles the vast majority of dry and intermittently wet interior environments without complaint: general commercial kitchens, bakeries, dry storage, packaging halls, and entry trenches that see water but little salt. If your trench drain grates or stainless steel floor grates sit in an area that gets rinsed with water and mild detergent and stays well drained, 304 will typically give you decades of service at a meaningfully lower material cost.

Choosing 304 where it fits is not cutting corners; it is responsible specification. Paying the 316 premium for a dry packaging-room walkway is budget you could have spent on better load class or anti-slip detailing. The same logic applies across our bar grating and custom metal grates lines.

When 316 is worth the premium

316 earns its keep the moment chlorides or aggressive chemistry enter the picture. Specify it for:

  • Brine and curing areas, seafood and meat processing, direct, sustained chloride contact.
  • Dairy and cheese plants, salt baths, lactic acid, and frequent caustic CIP cycles.
  • Pharmaceutical and biotech wash-down, where corrosion is also a contamination and particle-shedding risk.
  • Coastal and marine-adjacent sites, airborne chloride alone can pit 304 over time.
  • Areas using chloride-based sanitizers, common in many high-care production environments.

In these settings, the 316 premium is small next to the cost of replacing corroded grates, the downtime, and the audit risk. When the environment is borderline, we usually recommend 316, the alloy upgrade is far cheaper than a second installation. We engineer and draw every grate before we cut metal

Alloy selection is only half the specification. The other half is geometry, load path, drainage geometry, and how the grate ties into the surrounding slab and drainage system, and that is where drawings matter.

Finish, electropolishing, and sanitary detailing

The right alloy with the wrong finish still fails an audit. Surface finish governs cleanability, bacterial harbourage, and how well the passive layer holds up. For high-care and sanitary applications we fabricate to sanitary, GMP-style requirements, and electropolished finishes are available on stainless grates and fabricated metalwork.

Electropolishing removes the outermost layer of metal, smooths the microscopic peaks where soil and bacteria lodge, and enriches the surface with chromium, which actually improves corrosion resistance on both 304 and 316. Combined with smooth, fully welded and ground frames, radiused corners, and no unnecessary crevices, it gives you a surface that cleans down predictably and drains clean.

Detailing decisions that pay off in sanitary zones include:

  • Slope and open area, grates that drain fully rather than pooling, with bar profiles chosen for flow.
  • Continuous welds, ground flush, no skip welds or crevices to trap product.
  • Removable, liftable sections, so crews can actually clean the channel underneath.

Don't forget the rest of the assembly

Corrosion does not care which component fails first. If you spec 316 grates but bolt them into 304 or carbon-steel frames and fasteners in a brine area, the weakest link still rusts.
